Going Green

Over the last decade there has been a mad push to be “green.”  Start a greener living, let’s start with the basics and make it inexpensive.   We have become the society of “fast, “ “quick,” and “easy” but what comes with that is “chemicals,” “waste,” and “cancer.”  However, here are the top 5 easy steps to start making yourself greener.  These steps are easy and inexpensive for all.  Here are the top tips to start you and your family to become more “green.”

Eco Friendly, A Must!

Go Green
Go Green

How To Recycle!

Be Eco Friendly, Start Today!

Top 5 Easy and simple changes in your lifestyle:

  1. But a Brita water system or a Brita water pitcher with a filter. Brita systems filter the minerals and chemicals out of your water before you drink it. It is pure and tastes so much better. Buy one; help your family, yourself and your pets by drinking pure, fresh water that has been filtered. Try this simple change to going “green.”
  2. Organic skin products, everything can be absorbed through your skin, so start with products that you put on your skin! You can even make your own! Mix olive oil, milk and oatmeal for a GREAT exfoliation of your body and face! Put olive oil on your children's skin versus skin care products. Olive oil is a great natural moisturizer that will help your skin, hair and nails. Try it and save on the products, lotions, etc… but keep in mind you are saving your body from chemicals that come from store bought harmful products.
  3. Buy a couple of chickens, put them in a pen (like a dog pen) and they will start laying eggs, these are natural, organic eggs for you and your family. Chickens are easy to take care, pen them up, feed them corn and grain and they will start producing 1-2 eggs a day. It saves you money but saves you and your family for farm enhanced eggs and just think about the eggs that you use in all types of recipes, you are being more organic then you think when using your own organic eggs.
  4. Start your own garden, make it easy for you but start a garden and have fresh organic veggies for you and your family. It’s healthily and cheaper than going to the grocery store and buying the produce. Vegetables are wonderful food source for your children and even better when they are fresh and organic!
  5. Start recycling, help the world, your environment, your children’s future, help by going green through recycling. This sounds so simple but really, it is. Teach your children, nieces, nephews, friends the importance of recycling. Set up your stations at home to save your cans, bottles and papers. Make it a family project and life change.

This is part 1 of how to go green, start for you or for your husband, parents or children, but start working on it today. Harmful, chemical fed products aren’t good for you internally and externally. Simply steps to making it better and being more green is all it takes. Being green these days is a good thing!

From someone who grew her own food for years -- large garden, kept chickens, cattle too -- I have to laugh. You just mention it, like how simple and easy it is ... Go for it. First -- those chickens are subject to many, many, many diseases, seriously and in the hands of a newbie the chances of them living long enough to payback in eggs is nil -- and that pen you're speaking of: within a couple of weeks it will be an inch thick in slimy chicken poo which you will have to shovel every day, remembering of course that no other creature carries as much transferable parasites and germs to people as birds, particularly chickens. And as you run to the feed store every week to buy that sack of chicken-feed ($20-$30) and opt for the non-medicated organic kind (though you'd better think on that considering the diseases mentioned above) you might also want to consider how incredibly expensive these organic eggs are proving to be. Lastly, be careful how you handle those eggs -- particularly if you've eschewed antibiotics for your chickens. Hens, being what they are will have pooped all over 'em, and there is no food more likely to transmit salmonella and others germs than poorly handled eggs. So, standing in the summer heat, admiring your little garden that is feeding the bugs and requiring yet another watering, and holding your nose due to the stench of the chicken coop -- isn't this just the best advice you ever got?

Just thought a few words of reality might come in handy -- from someone who did all this back in the back-to-the-land movement decades ago. Trust me -- it's neither as easy nor as practical as such breezy advice would have you believe. Lynda

I'd have to agree about the chickens, I hate chickens. They are a fowl bird. :) The garden idea is a great one as I have a garden. I planted potatoes, corn, green beans, peas, and a whole list of stuff. It is great because I like the flavor of home grown vegetables.

Lastly, recycling is a definite must to secure our world for our childrens future. My daugthers and I recycle every day. Aluminum cans and plastic bottles to start with. Now if I could get my wife to do it, I'd be happy.

Lynda, thank you for your comment and I feel your passion within it. We have had chickens for the last six years and I can honestly say we have not had those types of problems at all. It actually is easy, however, we keep a small amount, clean the pen everyday, water and feed them organic grain and the work load is rather easy. My husband and I have helped others do the same with their pens. I would assume the bigger the pen (chickens coop) the more work. But we clean all eggs and make sure the pen is clean, specially through the summer months when it is hot and humid. The experience for us has been a pleasure and we have enjoyed having all the eggs, plus we sell them at a local market too. The profit is good for us as well. Gosh, I hate that it sounds so bad in your comment when it has been a great experience for us. However, as I said, ours is very small we keep it on the other side of the land which is not near the garden. Thanks again Lynda, I want the readers to have a realistic few from both sides and your comment helps with that!

Wesley, how are you? I love that you are teaching your children about gardening and recycling. I feel it is important but I also believe it's baby steps to get your started. My son loves helping in the garden too. I appreciate you reading and your comment!

PS; chickens are dirty little creatures but they have good eggs :)

I have a wide vacant lot (new landfill) to start going green on. You just said it! I want to keep a little coop for chicks for family consumption. I've been sowing seeds and see what happens next. Great useful green tips.

Interesting Hub Page. Another good way to go green is to replace your old bulbs with flourescent bulbs. A small amount of mercury in them I agree, but this is offset by less energy use and longer life.

Good simple tips - I think recycling and compost are two of the essential and most effective. Composting then leads onto gardening and the rest of it also - nice benefits.
